A Widget that Cares.

Hoo cares? I care.

Carebadges is a phenomenal concept. With this service you can support your favorite cause (global warming, anti-war, etc) by creating a new web-badge for your favorite social network, blog, or website. This badge not only tells your visitors about your cause, but also shows them the real-time impact ($$$) that the badge has had on your cause. If your cause is not listed on the Carebadge website, you can kick-start your own.

Carebadges is the brain child of Saar Gur. Saar is a stealth ninja that has been involved with efforts such as RockYou, GigaOm, and BrightRoll. Pretty smart dude, eh? Here is a little tid-bit from their web site:

Carebadges was started by a few internet geeks who want to change the world and we did not feel that we were doing so in our day-to-day lives. We think that every individual should help market awareness for the organizations and causes that they care about, and we want to build a platform that makes it easy for consumers to do this.

I encourage everyone in the Widgetsphere to let their readers know about Carebadges. It is a clutch project and is representative of the collective participation that has come to characterize the web. The guys from RockYou gave some love to the Carebadges on their website. Hopefully, Danny, Fred, Ivan, Ming, Pete, Steve, Tim, and other widget bloggers will give it a shout as well.

Check out the ‘Interests’ section of my MySpace page to see my Carebadge. It is below the psychotically addictive Frogger game. 🙂

Best of luck guys!

  • This is a great idea and we wish Saar and his team great success. I've already created an account but have yet to post about or grab a badge. An email was sent to Saar regarding some minor points and hopefully the guys over at CareBadges have considered and resolved these prior to launch.

I am glad you agree. From what Saar told me, he is definitely actively looking for feedback. So I am sure he appreciated your comments! Thanks as always for stopping by.

    p.s. Great post on YHOO.

    Two big objections to Carebadges:

Their website admits that they have not received its 501(c)(3) status. Unless and until they do, you won't get a tax deduction.

Worse than that, they won't say how much of your donation goes to the charity — just that they will deduct to cover credit card processing fees, processing fees, accountants, lawyers, etc. According to their website, they've had over 4 million impressions and their top 10 fundraisers have only raised $510 (#10 just raised $16, so there's no long tail here). That's not even going to cover their expenses.

So no deduction and nothing for charity.

    Forget it!

Art. those are some really good points. I would be curious to know why that is the case. My guess is that they are just trying to get things off the ground. You should ping them and let Saar and crew know.
